How to use these tools

Two habits that separate tight, in-tune playing from the rest: a steady pulse and strings that ring true. Here is the fastest way to build both.

Practising with the metronome

  1. Set the tempo — drag the slider, type a BPM, or tap the Tap tempo button along with the song.
  2. Pick your time signature — 4/4 for most pop and rock, 3/4 for waltzes, 6/8 for ballads and folk.
  3. Start slower than the target. Play the passage cleanly at 60–70% speed, then raise the tempo 4–5 BPM at a time.
  4. Use subdivisions for fast passages — eighth notes or 16ths expose rushing and dragging you can't hear on quarters alone.

Tuning your instrument

  1. Choose your instrument above (or Chromatic for anything else) and press Start listening.
  2. Pluck one string at a time and let it ring. The needle shows how far off you are, in cents.
  3. Needle left = flat — tighten the string. Needle right = sharp — loosen it slightly.
  4. Always tune up to the note. If you overshoot, go below the pitch and come back up — the string holds tuning better.
  5. No microphone handy? Tap a string button to hear its exact reference pitch and tune by ear.

Frequently asked questions

Is TuneTap really free?

Yes — the metronome and tuner are completely free to use, with no sign-up and no download. Both tools run entirely in your web browser, on phone, tablet or computer.

Which instruments can I tune with it?

There are one-tap presets for guitar (E A D G B e), bass (E A D G), ukulele (G C E A) and violin (G D A E). The Chromatic mode detects any note, so it also works for cello, mandolin, banjo, flute, voice practice and more.

Why does the tuner ask for microphone access?

The tuner listens to your instrument through the microphone to measure its pitch. The audio is analysed live on your own device — it is never recorded, stored or sent anywhere. If you deny microphone access, you can still tap the string buttons to hear reference pitches and tune by ear.

What does A4 = 440 Hz mean?

It's the reference pitch every other note is measured against — the A above middle C vibrating 440 times per second is the modern standard. Some orchestras tune slightly higher (442–444 Hz), so TuneTap lets you adjust the reference from 435 to 446 Hz.

How accurate is the metronome?

The metronome is scheduled with the Web Audio clock rather than screen timers, so the click stays sample-accurate and doesn't drift — even if you switch to another tab while practising.
